City Information of Kovalam

A former fishing village, Kovalam is just 16 kms away from Trivandrum, Kerala's capital city.This enchanting strip of golden sands is laced with the rich greenery of coconut palms.

Kovalam is an evergreen and pleasant climatic beach resort. It is a dreamy place for tourists all over the world. Today Kovalam beach is known as the "Paradise of the South". With high rock promontory and a calm bay of blue waters, this beach paradise creates a unique aquarelle on moonlit nights. Kovalam was brought to the public eye by the Maharaja of Travancore.

Over the past three decades, the place has been well developed, and now figures prominently on the world tourism map. Its scenic beauty and serenity is supplemented by the availability of excellent accommodation . There are a lot of restaurants which provide western style food as well as Indian, which is delicious. The grilled seafood items such as lobster, king prawns and kalamari which are got fresh from the sea at Kovalam.

Ayurvedic massage parlours, yoga centers and water sport facilities, makes Kovalam a popular haven for tourists from all over the globe. It is warm and clean by the coconut trees and the white sandbed as the seabreeze gently plays with the waves. Swimming and bathing are very refreshing and exhilirating in the waves. One can walk into the sea about 100 metres without loosing ground. This cove is also the safest place for swimming. Most of the visitors like to have a sunbath and get a good suntan on beach.

At many coastal places there are beautiful patches of coral reefs. The underwater views, which are visible during snorkeling, are really marvellous. The Kashmiri, Kerala Batik items, Kannada handicrafts are very attractive to the tourists. Many people from different countries and cultures, intermingling their languages get together in this paradise of the South and spend their leisure time joyfully. It makes moments heavenly.

Places to Visit at Kovalam

Aruvikkara

Description: Aruvikkara

A pilgrim centre and a place of tourist interest, Aruvikkara is situated on the banks of the Karamana river 16 km from Trivandrum, the capital of Kerala. There is an ancient temple here dedicated to Bhagavathi, built on a rock on the right bank of the river. There is an Inspection Bungalow here and the reservation authority is the Ass. Aruvippuram

 

This place is 24 km, away from Trivandrum near Neyyattinkara. There is a small Temple built by Sree Narayana Guru which attracts a large number of worshippers during the 'Sivarathri' festival. There is a small waterfall here and the name of this place is derived from this waterfall. There are buses to Neyyattinkara from Trivandrum.

Agasthyakoodam

 

This is a prominent peak in the Sahyadri ranges and is conspicuous for its height and isolation when seen from a distance. For about 2000 feet in the line of the range, it rises up in the form of a sharp pointed cone. This peak can be approached on foot from Boanacadu (61 km from Trivandrum) and from Neyyar dam (32 km).

Sarkara, Chirayinkeezhu

 

This place is situated 40 km away from Trivandrum in Chirayinkeezhu. The Bhagavathy temple here celebrates the annual festival 'Bharani' during March/April every year. The 'Kaliyoottu' in this temple is performed one month before Bharani Utsavam.

Neyyar Dam

Situated 32 km away from Trivandrum, this is a popular picnic spot with a lake and a dam. Facilities for boating are provided in the reservoir. There is a Crocodile Farm and a lion Safari Park. Frequent buses are available from Kattakkada, 20 k away from Trivandrum. The Sivananda yoga Vedantha Dhanwanthri Asramam(Ph: 0471-290493) is located near Neyyar Dam.

Padmanabhapuram Palace

The nearest airport is Trivandrum International Airport, 14 km away to Kovalam. Many International Airlines are operating flights to and from here. There are direct flights to New Delhi, Mumbai, Chennai and Banglore.

Trivandrum Central Railway Station is the nearest railway station. From here trains are available to all major parts of India.
